Barium swallow radiograph for GERD diagnosis 

Here x-rays are used to detect abnormalities like hiatal hernia and structural and anatomical problems of the esophagus. In this case, you will be asked to drink liquids, after which an xray is taken. This test can also be used to detect ulcers.

Upper endoscopy for Acid Reflux

: Known to be more precise than a barium swallow radiograph, this is usually done by the doctor. He may spray your mouth in order to numb the throat. Once you are slightly sedated, he will insert a slim, plastic tube with light and lens at the end to detect abnormalities. This tube is also known as endoscope. With this method, the doctor can find out injury to the esophagus. At times, a biopsy can also be done where he can use forceps or small tweezers to go through the endoscope so that he can take a piece of little tissue and study it under the microscope for abnormalities and infection.

pH monitoring examination

: In this test for GERD persisting symptoms, the doctor puts a little tube into the esophagus or a tiny device that will stick to the esophagus for 24 to 48 hours. Then a dairy is maintained where the patient’s activities are recorded with regards to the meals eaten, the type of meals, the time etc. This will give enough inforamton for the doctor to find out the reasons for continual GERD symptoms.
