GERD surgery is an option only when medicines and changes in the lifestyle do not help you recover from GERD. Fundoplication is the term for GERD surgical treatment. There is a type of procedure called Nissen fundoplication, where the top area of the stomach is wrapped around the LES to prevent GERD, strengthen the sphincter and treat hiatal hernia.

In Nissen fundoplication, there is an instrument used, known as laparascope. The doctor uses this little instument to keep the camera in place so that he can record movements in the stomach. Lapascopic fundoplication is a safe GERD surgery that can be done safely on adults as well as children. The recovery time for this GERD is 3 weeks, meaning, the patient can go to work by this period of time. He is discharged from the hospital in a period of 3 days.

The other surgical option for GERD is endoscopic technique, which makes use of the Stretta System, NDO Plicator and the Bard EndoCinch to treat chronic heartburn. In all of these techniques, an endoscope is used. In NDO Plicator and EndoCinch, stitches are put in the LES to strengthen the muscles by creating pleats. In the Stretta system, little electrodes are used to make tiny burns on the LES area.Once the burns are healed, the scars strengthen the LES
