Michael Jackson had vitiligo, the skin disorder that produces white patches on the skin. Though people wondered if Michael Jackson changed his skin color,  he was actually suffering from this skin disorder that causes depigmentation. Most people did not know the real reason why Michael Jackson always used gloves when he performed in a concert. It was only in an interview that he revealed his condition that the public learned he had Vitiligo.

Michael Joseph Jackson, famously known as Michael Jackson was born in August 29, 1958. His career as a musician made him famous around the world. The Guinness Book of records recognized him as the most successful entertainer of all time. Michael started his career as a child singer with the group Jackson Five, teaming up with his other siblings. After the group, he became a solo artist. With his top rated songs, he rose to fame. He became the icon of pop music during the course of his career. Many idolized him because of his energetic performances on stage and upbeat songs. But little did people know he had Vitiligo.

When Michael was on stage, he occasionally wore outfits that covered parts of his skin and wore make up. People thought this was just a stage gimmick but the fact was Michael had to conceal the white patches on his skin. During his performances Michael would appear on stage or on videos showing only some parts of his body that were not affected. Whenever he went out, he usually shielded himself from sunlight to protect his skin. As years past by, Michael’s skin just became lighter and lighter in color. The treatments that he underwent contributed to the discoloration of his skin. Michael only revealed his condition in 1993 during an interview with Oprah Winfrey that he had Vitiligo. He explained his condition about the whitening of his skin. People initially thought he was bleaching his skin to make it whiter.

Michael Jackson did not intentionally want to have his skin turn to white. Because of the skin disorder he had, he needed treatment to improve his appearance. He also had the inconvenience of wearing makeup every time he exposed himself to the public. The option he had was to take medication because the white patches on his skin was too discomforting for him. He underwent depigmentation therapy and used the drug monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone as medication. When he was undergoing treatment he met Debbie Rowe, a nurse, who later became his second wife and the mother to his two kids.

Michael died on June 25, 2009 at his home after he suffered cardiac arrest. Before he died, he took sedative drugs and was injected with Demerol, a painkiller. According to the investigation, the drugs may have caused his death. When he died there was an outpouring grief around the world. Michael Jackson’s death was a great loss to the music industry. He was only 50 years old at the time of his death. When his body was autopsied, there were white patches on the skin indicating he had Vitiligo.
