Molluscum contagiosum is viral infection that affects the skin. It is in the form of little spots that are shaped like pearls, which may be either whitish or pink in color. It is found that Molluscum contagiosum is more common in children, those who have skin contact with others while sharing beds and baths.

Adults with molluscum contagiosum are usually treated genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics.  Men are more likely to get this disease. The disease can be cleared in a few months and is not serious in nature, though in some cases, it can last a couple of years too.

molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus called poxvirus. The infection can result in the form of direct contact, indirect contact like sharing beds, towels, swimming pools and also sexual contact. Adults usually contract molluscum contagiosum through sexual contact and it is seen in the form of pearl shaped lesions on the penis. From the time of initial contact to the time spots apper, there can be a period of two to eight weeks.

1. Whitish or pinkish pearl-type spots on the face, legs, arms or trunk that can be 1 to 5 mm in diameter, sometime even larger.

2. In case, Molluscum Contagiosum is sexually transmitted, it is seen on the genitals, thighs and lower abdomen.

The diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum is easy for the doctor; he can find it out by just examining the patient’s skin, as the appearance is quite typical and unique.

No treatment is needed as such, because the disease can disappear on its own.

If the lesions are large and troublesome, they can be scraped away through local anesthesia. But still it is not recommended for children.

If there is local infection, the doctors will administer an antiseptic. Local infection is in the form of painful red or blackish spots around the area of the lesions

Prevent molluscum contagiosum

1. Do not be stressed, the condition goes on its own.

2. Wash your hands after touching the spots.

3. Do not share towels used on the infected area with other people.

4. Avoid scratching because they can lead to  infection
